PRESS RELEASE 5
29th Okarina Festival again brings to Bled the greatest names of ethno and jazz
Okarina, Slovenia’s biggest world music festival, is set for its 29th, pre-anniversary, edition this summer. In the course of twelve days from 23 July to 3 August 2019, Bled Castle, as the venue of the first two concerts, and Lake Promenade will host 12 amazing music bands and performers from all over the globe. As the Festival fans already know, all Okarina concerts are free of charge and all, those at the Castle and those on the Promenade stage, will start at 20:30.
As usual, the Festival will kick off at Bled Castle on 23 and 24 July with performances by the Spanish band Vigüela, which will capture the essence of Spanish folk music as performed in village homes and festivities in the province Castilla-La Mancha, and the music band Legende from Serbia. After the first two days, the Festival will move to the Lake Promenade, where the stage set against the most stunning natural background will first welcome the Afrobeat sensation Antibalas from Brooklyn, USA, followed by the French-Pakistani musical project Markus & Shahzad Santoo Khan with its inspiring fusion of traditional Pakistani music qawwali and French breakbeat.
On 27 July the Okarina stage will be taken over by Ravid Kahalani and his band Yemen Blues, whose original sound is a combination of traditional Yemenite melodies and the world of funk, blues and jazz. A day later the promenade walk will be buzzing to the rhythms of the music from nearly every corner of the world – the repertoire of the Belgian ensemble Panta Rhei is in an intriguing whole culled from Romanian and traditional Flemish songs, Polish folk songs, English melodies and Swedish melancholy. Students of the local music school DOREMI and Boštjan Gombač will open the second half of the Festival. On Tuesday 30 July, the sky above the town and the lake will resonate with the briskly upbeat music of the French blues group Delgres, the missing link between the French, Caribbean and American culture, which can musically be classified somewhere between Ali Farko Toure, Tinariwen and the Black Keys.
Na zadnji julijski festivalski dan bo na Okarini oder namenjen legendi, namreč na festivalu bo nastopil jamajški jazz pianist Monty Alexander, nominiranec za grammyja in eden petdesetih največjih jazz pianistov vseh časov. Za njim bosta na prvi avgustovski dan oder zasedli sestri Lovell aka Larkin Poe z udarnim bluesovskim zvokom električnih kitar in kitarsko tehniko bottleneck, za kar ju pogosto imenujejo kar »mlajši sestri bratov Allman«. Leta 2014 sta bili sestri Lovell izbrani za največje odkritje festivala Glastonbury 2014 po izboru angleške revije The Observer.
On the last Festival night in July, the Okarina stage will feature a renowned Jamaican jazz pianist, Monty Alexander, a Grammy nominee and one of the 650 greatest jazz pianists of all time. On the first evening in August, the listeners will enjoy the blues-inspired sound of electric guitars of the Lovell sisters, aka Larkin Poe. The last two evenings of this year’s Festival will belong to the Italian group Canto Antico and Tunisian jazz musician Dhafer Youssef, who will bring Okarina to an end on 3 August 2019.
